Biography
Daniel W. Leon (B.A. Macalester College, M.A. University of Michigan, Ph.D. University of Virginia) is an Associate Professor of Classics. His main area of research is Greek and Roman historical narrative, particularly as it reflects intercultural relations and the political uses of the past. Additional interests include Hellenistic history, Roman Egypt, epigraphy, papyrology, and medieval Greek scholarship. His first book, Arrian the Historian: Writing the Greek Past in the Roman Empire (University of Texas Press, 2021) uses Arrian of Nicomedia as a case study to examine the role of specialized historical research within the intellectual culture of the Roman Empire. A second book will focus on the reign of Philip Arrhidaeus and explore the symbolic significance of this understudied Macedonian king both throughout antiquity and in the context of modern Greek nationalism.
